Over the last week I've been away at Queer Pagan Camp. There I ended up having a number of conversations with friends in the second half of their 50s, who are beginning to make plans for their retirements.

All of which made me think about the spaces we want to retire to, what would a queer (and, as ever, I don't just mean queer=LGBT) retirement home would look like.
I'm also interested in the on-going issue of how we make queer spaces more inclusive across the age-range of our communities.

Santa Cruz City Council,

I am writing to protest the assault and false arrest carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield by Santa Cruz Police Officer Brierly. A description of that arrest from an eyewitness follows this letter.

You as the City Council are the boss of the police and hold direct responsibility for the outrageous violations of civil liberties that are routinely carried out by your police department.

Yours is a police a department that has been successfully sued for its violations of free speech rights, a department that has violently broken up a protest against the war in Yugoslavia, a department that purposely targets activists for harassment, brutality and false arrests, a department that murdered activist John Dine in cold blood, a department that has been caught spying on and infiltrating anti-war organizations, a department that purposely targets the poorest of the poor for harassment, brutality and false arrests under the direct orders of the anti-homeless laws that you as a City Council have passed, a police department that targeted the Blue Lagoon, a gay bar, for special homophobic treatment eventually costing the City in a settlement of well over a million dollars.

The homophobic hate crime that Officer Brierly has now carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield is just one in a long list of crimes carried out by your police department. Your encouragement of past crimes has led directly to this most recent one. The Santa Cruz Police department is sending out a strong message that Santa Cruz is not safe for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community and that the City no longer wants their tourism dollars.

I demand that Officer Brierly be immediately fired from the police force for his hate crime against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield and that Officer Brierly be jailed on the charge of felony assault for his criminal violence and reckless endangerment of the life of a person suffering with HIV/AIDS.

Sincerely, Steven Argue
Subject: case #065-04163
To: dao@co.santa-cruz.ca.us
District Attorney Bob Lee: May 3, 2006

I am a witness in the case of Shane(Tammy) Maxfield, case #065-04163. Shane was handcuffed and forced to sit down against the chainlink fence on Pacific Ave/Church for "directing traffic." He was actually helping a friend and another witness, David Bliss jump David's battery to move his van out of the handicapped space.

The officer refused to give me his name and badge number. I begged him twice not to arrest Shane as he is severely ill with AIDS and has just started a dibilitating HIV cocktail of Trevada and Sustiva. He laughed at me and said "That's not gonna happen." I told him Shane might die of stress in jail and he guffawed and shrugged me off.

It was apparent the officer realized he hadn't charged Shane with anything yet as he pulled Shane up by his coat, slammed him against the fence and forced the top of Shane's head to barely touch him. He said: "Now I've got you for battery." This was in full public view of at least 40 witnesses at 1 PM on April 25,2006. Before the sergeant could take stories from witnesses Shane was put in the police car and taken to jail. His arraignment is May 15, 2006. The jail personnel were sympathetic and thought the whole incident ridiculous.

It is a travesty of justice to allow a police officer with NO communication skills arrest a severely ill man for helping a friend (the van was already jumped and ready to go when the arresting officer on the beat got there) This officer should be removed from the police force as he is nothing more than a thug in a uniform. He is guilty of police brutality, false arrest and battery upon Shane not the other way around.

Who are they? Check out http://www.battlecry.com/

They believe in ongoing wars against Muslim countries, recruiting our youth as “Christian soldiers.” They want to enact laws that are antiwoman, antichoice, antisex, and anti-gay.

So, let's kick this off...

What could I possible mean by that? Unfortunately, it's only possible to explain myself through negatives. For instance, I don't like the gay bar scene. I don't 'perform' in shows where the transgendered nature of the performers is the focus. Really, the best thing I can say is "if you are, you know."

I am planning to go to London this saturday and sunday - but i am not going to the ESF itself - it's too expensive.
I was wondering if Queeruption-like people are meeting at certain spots or events so I can meet up with you and them.
Additionally, I'm working to help create a queer/faerie healing arts center in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco. It will be an urban space (probably only indoor, but some outdoor room would be lovely too) where people can practice massage, reiki, hypnosis, energy work, accupressure/accupuncture, herbalism and other healing modalities. (Profits from this center will go towards purchasing the other land, above).

i have a bit of trouble with the word 'queer.'
I thought this word was originally used as a swear word towards gay men mostly.
But then the last few years it seems to have become an umbrella term - this also happened to the word 'transgender'.
So I was thinking on posting about spaces that are friendly and resourcefull for both gay, lesbi and tranny folks here in Holand.
But I think in the Netherlands 'queer' still means 'gay'.
How can we exchange information if the definitions are off?
Another question: for the past 11 years I called myself bisexual, but i don't feel comfortable using that word anymore - for many reasons. First of all the bi scnene felt very straight to me, secondly the word 'bi' conforms to the notion there are only two genders, thirdly: if I don't identify as either gender and I'll always be of a different gender than my partner, then I must be... heterosexual!!
But I don't want to call myself het...
So should i call myself simply 'sexual' or 'queer'??
Jeez...
I WANT to be called _some_thing....

* build alliances across queer generations and build spaces that are more inclusive of queer elders
* engage with and celebrate cultural difference - challenge racism in our communities and build global networks of solidarity and friendship
* defend sites of public homosex (and take responsibility for tidying up after ourselves when cruising outdoors)
* create our own autonomous queer spaces - they are spaces of hope

"the closet can work in different ways in the urban landscape and is not limited to making all gay spaces and spatial practices hidden or invisible. This reinforces my belief that the incorporation of gay spaces into bureaucratically planned ‘representations of space’ is limited and limiting. For me, queer space, is quite a different entity. It is a form of ‘commons’, or counter-public space that escapes the bounds of abstract representations of space through the everyday (and, at times, consciously oppositional) spatial practices of queer folk."

It's a little out of context, I realise, but I'm interested to hear whether the distinction between 'gay space' (as something that is increasingly incorporated into the urban planning structures of major cities) and more autonomous 'queer spaces' makes sense to any of you....

Is this a platform to perpetuate these in hopes to improve & elaborate, or to go beyond=toward that which has not yet been experienced?

Here's three from me, from London:
1) The Pride of Stepney - my local sleaze/cruise bar, which closed five years ago. Many fun times in (what they used to coyly describe in their ads as) the 'interactive games room'

2) The London Lesbian and Gay Centre, Cowcross Street - memories of long, angry, but very enjoyable ACT-UP London meetings there in the early 90s.

3) The railway walk, Finsbury Park - a great little cruising ground, with a great sense of community.
