Define "queer"...?

Hello all,
i have a bit of trouble with the word 'queer.'
I thought this word was originally used as a swear word towards gay men mostly.
But then the last few years it seems to have become an umbrella term - this also happened to the word 'transgender'.
So I was thinking on posting about spaces that are friendly and resourcefull for both gay, lesbi and tranny folks here in Holand.
But I think in the Netherlands 'queer' still means 'gay'.
How can we exchange information if the definitions are off?
Another question: for the past 11 years I called myself bisexual, but i don't feel comfortable using that word anymore - for many reasons. First of all the bi scnene felt very straight to me, secondly the word 'bi' conforms to the notion there are only two genders, thirdly: if I don't identify as either gender and I'll always be of a different gender than my partner, then I must be... heterosexual!!
But I don't want to call myself het...
So should i call myself simply 'sexual' or 'queer'??
Jeez...
I WANT to be called _some_thing....

Queer to me is more open and "umbrella". I haven't noticed that about "transgender", though. Queer (in my mind) means gay, lesbian, transexual, metrosexual (I hate that word), straight-but-not-narrow, freaky, pierced-all-over, tattooed...

    In general, anything not run-of-the-mill.

I'm gonna stop now before I run out of hyphens to use...

    :)
