it begs the question about the originality of the 'mecca' or more accurately, if it is an artificial construct, rather than an organic development, will it last? will it thrive?

when i was back in the SF/Bay Area earlier this spring, the talk there is of trying to start a 'gay' neighborhood in Oakland in the Grand/Lake area. i was struck more by the notion that neighborhood was being 'induced' rather than a natural 'coming together' of small shops, businesses, and residents to make a 'village' 'neighborhood' or 'community' - but in this case, Grand/Lake has a sizeable queer contingent to it. but it certainly isn't a population representative of the majority of the queer folks in the East Bay.

i was the one who sent the article to milo for the reason that in my travels in England, i knew of Hull as being a not so great place and it was rather curious to me why anyone would think to start a 'gay village' or whatever there.
